Italian designers Dolce&Gabbana sentenced to prison for tax evasion

 

Italian fashion designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the men behind fashion power house, Dolce & Gabbana were today June 19th sentenced to one year and eight months in prison by an Italian court after being found guilty of tax evasion. They were also fined €500,000.

The multimillionaire designers were accused of hiding millions of euros from Italian tax authorities, charges they deny and have said they intend to appeal against any conviction.

Italian authorities are accusing them of moving their brand to a Luxembourg-based holding company Gado - in 2004, so they could avoid declaring taxes on royalties of about 1 billion euros.

The Italian authorities have been investigating the designers for about six years now and they were actually cleared of tax evasion/fraud charges at a previous trial in April 2011 but Italy's highest court overturned that ruling, ordering that the case be sent back to trial.

Their sentences have been suspended pending their appeal.

Brazil protests spread in Sao Paulo, Brasilia and Rio

 

As many as 200,000 people have marched through the streets of Brazil's biggest cities, as protests over rising public transport costs and the expense of staging the 2014 World Cup have spread.

The biggest demonstration was in Rio de Janeiro, where 100,000 people joined a mainly peaceful march.

In the capital, Brasilia, people breached security at the National Congress building and scaled its roof.

The protests are the largest seen in Brazil for more than 20 years.

New York Forum musters help for African jobless

 

One of the biggest challenges for Africa is how to provide employment opportunities to its youth, the New York Forum AFRICA has heard.

"If Africa's youth is left without educational jobs, growth will be pointless," said host country Gabon's President Ali Bongo Ondimba at the three-day forum, which ended on Sunday in the capital Libreville.

"Young people will be without hope if they cannot find a place in our growing economies. Our countries' growth must be inclusive and people-oriented."

The forum gathered some 1,000 participants, including business leaders, politicians and decision-makers to discuss growth opportunities for the world's second most populous continent.

They heard that 65 percent of Africa's total population was under the age of 35, of whom about 35 percent were between 15 and 35. Youth account for 60 percent of Africa's unemployed, according to estimates by the World Bank.

"If the employment problem can't be solved, Europe would be inevitably affected as many immigrants would go to European countries to look for jobs," said Idriss Deby Itno, president of Chad. "So Africa should develop itself and create conditions to tackle this challenge."

Deby Itno said Africa and its partners should make the best use of its natural resources to produce more value-added products locally and also construct more infrastructure, which would promote trade and business exchanges among African nations.

He added that China has pursued a complementary approach with African countries in this process, which was a real "win-win situation" and a mutually beneficial partnership.

"All the players and partners of Africa should act in a similar way," said the Chad president.

Footballer Lionel Messi and Dad investigated for tax fraud in Spain

 

Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi and his father are being investigated in Spain for allegedly defrauding the state of more than 4m euros (£3.4m).

The 25-year-old Argentina forward and his father, Jorge Horacio, are suspected of filing fraudulent tax returns for 2007-09, officials say. The World Player of the Year expressed his surprise, denying the allegation.

His Barcelona net salary is said to be some 16m euros a year, making him one of the world's highest-paid athletes.
He has also signed a number of multimillion-dollar endorsements with major sponsors around the globe.  But does that really stops them from defrauding? evn if it is 100,000.... To me he can.

World Oldest Man "Jiroemon Kimura" Dies Aged 116 years

The world's oldest person and the oldest man ever to have lived "Jiroemon Kimura" has died of natural causes aged 116 years, media reported Wednesday.

The Japanese who was born in 1897, died in hospital early Wednesday morning, Kyodo News cited the local government as saying.

Kimura, from Kyotango in Kyoto Prefecture, was recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest living person in December 2012 when a woman from the United States died at the age of 115.

On the 28th day of that month he broke another record, when he became the oldest man ever verified to have lived when he reached the age of 115 years and 253 days. I Think thats a record lost also.... RIP Man

Phoenix Couple arrested from beating their 2 year old son to death

 

A Phoenix couple are facing first-degree murder and child abuse charges in the beating death of their 2-year-old son.

Phoenix police officers and Phoenix Fire Department paramedics responded to the family's apartment near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road for a report of a child not breathing. They found the boy unresponsive and paramedics transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A witness told police that he heard the boy's father, Darnell Moses Alvarez, 24, disciplining him in the morning and again in the afternoon. He said he did not see the discipline but described it as "excessive."

The boy's mother, Davieanna Marlena Blake, 21, told investigators that Alvarez hit the child with a belt after discovering he had wet himself. Blake said she did not intervene because she did not want to upset Alvarez any further, according to the documents.

Blake said she then went to work and when she returned home, she saw her son had multiple bruises on his body and was lethargic. She told police that Alvarez did not want to take the boy to the hospital because Child Protective Services would be called, according to the court papers. The child stopped breathing while the couple argued.

Alvarez told investigators that he hit his son two times with a belt for urinating in the bed that morning. He said that later in the day, he hit the child multiple times with a belt after he defecated in his underwear and got feces all over the bathroom.

According to court documents, the toddler had large bruises on his legs, arms, buttocks, back and face. An autopsy revealed the boy had a lacerated liver, internal bleeding and bruising throughout his body.

Alvarez and Blake were arrested Thursday morning. Alvarez's bond was set at $500,000 and Blake's bond was set at $250,000.

The court documents show the couple have a history of domestic violence and police suspect that they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

5 Dead as More Tornadoes Slam Oklahoma City Area

 Less than two weeks after a tornado killed dozens of people in Moore, Oklahoma, more twisters and violent weather swept through the area, leaving at least five people dead, flipping trucks on interstate highways during rush hour and miring cars in deep floods.

Accordinng to ABCNews, The National Weather Service initially estimated that five tornadoes touched down in the Oklahoma City area, though the number was likely to change as survey teams visited the area Saturday.


The weather was blamed for at least five deaths, according to the Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office. Among them were a mother and her baby possibly sucked out of their cars near Interstate 40, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Betsy Randolph told ABC News.

"We know that the storm picked them up and swept them away," Randolph said. "When the troopers found them, they were both deceased.

"We know that a mother and a child were killed tonight on I-40 in Canadian County," Randolph said. "I cannot stress to you just how important it is that if people don't have to be out, that they stay inside and seek shelter. ... There's just no safe place to be except underground when a tornado is present."

Czech woman, 23, is pregnant with the country's first naturally conceived quintuplets

A Czech woman has beaten staggering odds to become pregnant with quintuplets without using IVF.

Alexandra Kinova, 23, is due to give birth by Caesarean section on Sunday to the Czech Republic's first ever set of quins.

Ms Kinova, who already has one son, did not realise she was carrying five babies until last month.

At first doctors said she was having twins but in March staff at the Prague Institute for the Care of Mother and Child said she was actually pregnant with four children. Continue.....

However, it was not until the following month that she finally discovered she was having quintuplets.

Ms Kinova, from Milovice, about 30 km east of Prague, told Czech news site denik.cz that she was in shock when she was told.

She said: 'When we finally found a fifth head, I started to cry.'

According to local media, her children will be the country's first set of quins.

The odds of conceiving quins naturally is one is several million, according to experts.

The mother said both she and her partner have a family history of twins.

She said aside from four months of morning sickness, she has had few complications in the pregnancy.

Ms Kinova said she has been able to sleep on her side and has not had any problems with her breathing.

And she said she plans to breastfeed all five, as she did with her first-born son.

Ms Kinova said despite the best efforts of the doctors they still do not know the sex of all the babies.

Two of the unborn babies are hidden underneath the other three - two boys and a girl, who she plans to call Daniel, Michael and Tereza.

She said: 'I very much look forward to seeing how they will look. It's a great charm, but we cannot see anything properly - only a head or legs.'

The hospital will double the number of doctors and midwives for her Caesarean.

They said they have administered drugs to help speed up the development of the babies' lungs but they cannot be sure of their condition until they are born.

Dr Alena M?churová, head of the hospital, said they hope that all five babies and the mother will be fine but said they cannot rule out complications.

Chinese baby 'fell into sewage pipe accidentally' - Mother Claims

        
        

The mother of the newborn baby boy flushed down a toilet in China watched in secret as rescuers plucked him alive from a sewer pipe.

The 22-year-old woman is believed to have raised the initial alarm but only confessed to police after they searched her rented room and found toys and blood-stained toilet paper, the Chinese state news agency reported.
According to BBC News,

The baby is currently recovering in hospital after being cut free from the pipe in Jinhua city on Saturday.

China's Zhezhong News reported that the 22-year old mother told police she could not afford an abortion. She was unmarried and kept her pregnancy secret, police told AFP news agency.

She said she tried to catch the baby after unexpectedly giving birth, but that he slipped into the sewer. She then alerted her landlord, according to state news agency Xinhua.

The mother did not think she could afford to look after the baby, so she did not tell anyone that the baby was hers, reports Xinhua. She went to work after he had been rescued and only admitted the baby was hers when confronted by police later.

Police are continuing to investigate whether the incident was an accident or the result of a deliberate act, reports Xinhua.

Xclusive: Newborn Baby Saved From Toilet Pipe In China

A newborn baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe directly beneath a toilet has been rescued by firefighters in eastern China.

Police are treating the case as attempted homicide and are looking for his parents. It has sparked anger on social media sites,

China's state broadcaster CCTV said the abandoned infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residential building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang.

The two-day-old boy was discovered after residents of the building reported the sound of a baby crying, state television said.

Firefighters had to remove the pipe, reported to be 10cm (three inches) in diameter, and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully cut around it to rescue the baby inside, the report said.

They spent nearly an hour taking the tube apart piece by piece with pliers and saws and finally recovered the 5lb (2.3kg) boy, whose placenta was still attached.

State-run news site Zhejiang News said the child - named Baby No 59 from the number of his incubator - is safe and in a stable condition.

"Can these people be called human beings? The animal to human ratio among the grown-ups is rising inexorably."

Woolwich killer, Michael Adebolajo was held in Kenya on terror charges and deported to the UK

 

Woolwich suspect Michael Adebolajo came to the attention of MI5 after he appeared in court in Kenya on suspicion of planning to fight for a terrorist group.

Adebolajo was arrested with five others in November 2010. All were said to have been heading for neighbouring Somalia, where they had been recruited by Al-Shabaab, the Islamist insurgent organisation.

Adebolajo, who was filmed after the Woolwich slaughter with blood on his hands, was deported without being charged.

It was soon after his return to Britain, a close friend claims, that MI5 earmarked him as a potential  informant and began assiduously courting him.The Mail on Sunday has been told:

•   Intelligence officers offered Adebolajo money and gave him a mobile phone;

•   Adebolajo was asked to spy on a group of Muslims with links to Al Qaeda terrorists in Yemen;

•   He resisted their attempts to ‘turn’ him and complained to lawyers he was being harassed.

An East London-based solicitor, who asked not to be named, said: ‘He came to see us last year. He raised serious concerns which are similar to ones we have heard before from others. He met a member of my team and discussed his case.

He complained that they [MI5] kept wanting to talk to him and his family. They kept coming round his family home and wanted to meet him regularly. We said if he wanted to deal with it properly, he should give us the number they [MI5] had given him and we would call them. 

‘He was very paranoid about the whole thing. But he didn’t come back so we didn’t do anything else with him.’

It is understood that soon afterwards the contact with intelligence officers suddenly ceased.Adebolajo’s links to the security services were first revealed on Friday on Twitter by one of his closest friends, Abu Nusaybah. Hours later, Nusaybah was arrested under the Terrorism Act just as he was finishing a pre-recorded interview for BBC Newsnight.
Earlier that day, Nusaybah, whose real name is Ibrahim Hassan, gave an interview to a Mail on Sunday reporter in which he made further claims about MI5 and Adebolajo.  ‘They wanted him to spy on a group of Muslims who have links to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula [AQAP]. They wanted information about them.’
AQAP, based in Yemen, has been called ‘the most active operational franchise’ of Al Qaeda beyond Pakistan and Afghanistan.
‘They offered him [Adebolajo] money and they gave him a special mobile phone to use when calling them,’ said Hassan. ‘They even took him in for interviews, just to intimidate him to work for them. But he refused.’
By the time Adebolajo arrived in Kenya in 2010, he was already deeply immersed in radical Islam and espousing extremist views.
Along with five Kenyan youths, he was picked up by local police on November 23 after spending the night in a guesthouse on Faza Island, part of the Lamu archipelago in the Indian Ocean close to the Somali border.
Principal magistrate Richard Kirui was told that all six men had been recruited to Al-Shabaab and intended to fight with them to bring down the country’s transitional government.
Al-Shabaab has imposed a strict version of Sharia law in the areas it controls, including stoning to death women accused of adultery.
In court, the youths claimed they had been given nothing to eat for two days and had been denied access to lawyers.
They had spent a night in police custody in Mombasa and were questioned by counter terrorism officers before being taken to court the next day. Adebolajo was fingerprinted and photographed and made a full statement.
After the order was made to deport Adebolajo, police officers accompanied him, handcuffed, in an unmarked police vehicle to Nairobi airport. 
During the day-long drive, the vehicle was involved in a minor accident, and although no-one was injured the journey was delayed.That evening Adebolajo was put on the first available flight to London.
At this time he was living on a council estate in Greenwich, South East London, with girlfriend Rikki Thomas and her two children from a previous relationship.The Mail on Sunday has learned that Thomas – arrested last week in a police raid on her Greenwich house and later released without charge – gave birth to the terror suspect’s son last year.
Neighbours yesterday recalled how 29-year-old Thomas wore mini-skirts and was a ‘bright lovely woman’ before meeting him six years ago and turning into someone who hardly left the house.
Odette Hamilton said: ‘Rikki began to dress more and more like a Muslim. Eventually she wore the whole burka. 
‘When they walked down the street, he used to make her follow behind him, in subordination.’

    Sources today named one of the suspects as Michael Adebolajo (pictured above) who, along with his fellow alleged killer, is a British citizen who converted to a radical form of Islam. They are not thought to have links to terror groups based in Nigeria, such as the jihadist militant organisation Boko Haram. The Foreign Office warns of a high threat from terrorism in the West African nation and raises the prospect of a risk of retaliatory attacks following the French intervention in Mali.

The other killer is also an African though he has not been formally identified as a Nigerian.

Man killed in broad day light in Woolwich, South London

 

 A man, believed to be a serving soldier, was attacked and beheaded with a machete in broad day light yesterday afternoon in Woolwich, South London by two men in what is suspected to be a terror attack.

The soldier was attacked with knives and meat cleavers following a car crash. Two black men in a blue Vauxhall car rammed into the soldier on John Wilson Street, then jumped out of their car and started attacking him with meat cleavers. An eye witness said the attackers were "chopping this guy to pieces.

It is claimed that the men shouted 'Allahu Akbar', which means "God is great" in Arabic before attacking. After the attack, the men then waited for about 20 minutes for police to show up and then tried to attack the officers. They were shot by police. They are both still alive and have been arrested.

Someone witnessed the beheading and shared what he saw on his Twitter page.

UK arrests Two Arik crew members for drug trafficking

 

Two staff of Nigeria’s largest airline, Arik Air have been arrested at the Heathrow Airport in London for suspected drug trafficking on Tuesday.

A statement by the Head of Press and Public Affairs Section, British High Commission, Rob Fitzpatrick, on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of the crew members.


He said, “The two, Nigerian women aged 37 and 32, who worked for the airline Arik Air, had arrived on a flight from Lagos, Nigeria on the evening of Monday, May 20.

“They were arrested after a package of drugs was discovered by Border Force officers on a bus which had been used to transport air crew.

“It is estimated that the cocaine, if cut and sold on the UK streets, could have had a potential street value of around £600,000.

“The pair remain in Border Force custody where they will be questioned further.”

Over 90 people killed as Massive tornado rips through Oklahoma

A devastating two-mile-wide tornado touched down in Moore, a community of 41,000 people about 10 miles south of Oklahoma City yesterday afternoon Monday May 20th, killing over 90 people - including at least 20 children, with 24 more missing. Plaza Towers Elementary school was in the direct path of the giant twister and took a direct hit during 45 minutes of terror yesterday afternoon.

Homes, cars, a hospital and another elementary school were destroyed by the tornado. More than 120 people are being treated at hospitals, including about 50 children. The death toll is expected to rise. 

President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster area in Oklahoma, ordering federal aid to supplement state and local efforts in Moore. See more photos below...
