Tiger Woods’ return to dominance on the PGA Tour has also padded his pocketbook.
He is once again No. 1 on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, a position he held from 2001 to 2012. Last year, Woods was supplanted by boxer Floyd Mayweather.
The magazine reported in its most recent issue that Woods earned $78.1 million between June 1, 2012 and June 1, 2013. That figure includes prize money, endorsements, appearance fees and Woods’ golf-course design work.
Woods’ earnings figure to increase in the next year, with news earlier this week that he was close to signing a new deal with Nike. The company currently pays Woods more than $20 million annually, according to Forbes.
According to this report, Woods’ scandal in late 2009 cost him five sponsors and $50 million in annual income.
Rounding out the top five in Forbes’ annual list, which was released Wednesday, are Roger Federer ($71.5 million), Kobe Bryant ($61.9M), LeBron James ($59.8M) and Drew Brees ($51M).
Other golfers who cracked the top 100: Phil Mickelson checked in at No. 7 ($48.7 million), while Rory McIlroy was No. 21 ($29.6M), Ernie Els 78th ($19.5M) and Brandt Snedeker 81st ($19M).
